Building a personal brand is the best way to differentiate yourself from other designers. It helps build trust, attract better clients, and ultimately creates your own niche. When it comes to personal branding, video has emerged as a powerful social media tool that helps showcase your influence in the industry.
In this episode, I’m excited to talk about personal branding with the founder of Toronto-based creative agency Alessya Baggetta Designs. Alessya specializes in creating brand experiences with purpose. On this episode, we’ll learn why video is so essential to branding and how you can use it to attract your dream clients.
Creating a content strategy
Video content creation requires a strategy that builds purposeful, intentional content that converts. Your strategy begins with identifying your ideal client to determine who you’re talking to which in turn helps drive the type of content required. Your style and design approach then creates your personal brand voice.
The importance of the “hook”
Video allows interior designers to engage with their audience in a more dynamic and visual way, capturing the audience’s attention a lot quicker than generic photos. But you need a hook to draw them in. Once you hook the viewer, you have a better chance they’ll binge your content, establishing your influence and building relationships.
Using different types of videos
Interior designers should create different types of videos to showcase different aspects of design and their brand. This might include speaking to the camera about the process, home, tips, and tricks to help establish yourself as an industry leader or walkthroughs on site to explore the details of a design project to establish a sense of style.
Voiceovers explaining what the audience is seeing are also trendy and add an element of entertainment. Of course, there’s still a need for transformation content that shows your befores and afters through video.
Timing it right: the shot list
Timing is especially important for transformation videos. So how do you time this right? With shot lists. Because construction can take months or even years depending on the scope of the project, there should be scheduled filming days at critical stages of the project. Once the project is complete, you can schedule your photo shoot and filming the same day to save time. A very in-depth shot list covers every detail from what you’re filming right down to what you will wear to complement the space.
DIY video tips
Not all designers have the budget to invest in outsourced video content. However, with the right approach and strategy you can DIY your videos and still see great results using Alessya’s tips:
- Invest in the right equipment
- Create a plan of action
- Understand your messaging to guide and inform your scripts
- Create video with purpose and intent
- Choose the location
- Prep and practice to become better at filming and using the equipment
- Practice your scripts to become more comfortable being on camera
- Enlist a team member or someone to help
- Use an editing software to perfect your content
- Include captions using AI
- Schedule when you want to post your video content and where
Analytics
To become better at video content creation, you need to understand how well your videos perform. Analytics tell you which videos see the most engagement and which ones fail, so you can stick to what works.
Acing content
A good place to start is sharing more of the behind-the-scenes moments of your business. How do you put a presentation together for your clients? What is your source of inspiration? What is your project management process? How do you source items in design?
Set time aside for content
Filming in batches once a month allows you to remain focused on the task at hand. You know this is my filming day and you commit to that time you’ve set aside. A monthly video blitz capturing 5 to 15 videos allows you to create a library ready to post based on your content calendar.
Repurpose content
When mapping out content, ask yourself how you can repurpose existing video. For example, you might create a reel featuring your favourite kitchens.
Personal branding
That brings us back to the idea of personal branding and video. It doesn’t hurt to show your personal side as that’s what helps set you apart. Your personal interests can resonate with viewers, establishing a connection and helping you convert followers into clients.
